This year marks the 60th anniversary of Gucci’s official introduction in Japan in 1964. With its celebration of 60 years in Japan, Gucci recruited a group of six local Japanese artists to reimagine the classic Gucci Bamboo 1947 design, selected by de Sarno. With each piece, the Italian fashion house delved into the rich history of Japanese craftsmanship, from lacquerware to ceramics. Launched in 1947 by house founder Guccio Gucci, the exhibition features 60 vintage Bamboo 1947 handbags from the house’s Florentine archive in a multitude of fabrics and finishes, primarily dating from the 1980s and 1990s.

Bamboo 1947: Then and Now is a special collaboration in which traditional Japanese artisans and contemporary artists combine these creative talents to upcycle and create works using vintage Gucci Bamboo 1947 handbags. The exhibition will be held at the Gucci Ginza Gallery from August 2 through September 23, 2024.
